Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. As I sit to write this month’s letter to you, it is a beautiful, sunny, spring day. The window to my office is open and I can hear the birds sharing their music. It is very easy on a day like today to rejoice in the creation of the Lord. My heart is uplifted and everything looks positive. But what about those cloudy days? What about those days when nothing seems to be very uplifting?
The Lord reminds us that we are never alone. Even on those days that do not seem very sunny, the Lord is with us. On May 31 we will celebrate Pentecost, the day when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of the Christian Church. I fail to find on the Christian calendar, or any calendar, a day that has been set aside to remember the leaving of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit must be with us even on those days where it seems we are alone and there is nothing to celebrate. Since we understand the Holy Spirit to be part of the Triune God, we must acknowledge that the Lord is still with us. This fact alone provides comfort and can be uplifting to our hearts.
We, as believers, sometimes forget some of the most important promises of our Lord. The Lord promised to always be with us when he said, “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b) The arrival of the Spirit to be our advocate, guide, and companion is a reality of that promise. No matter what a day may have in store for us, the Lord’s Spirit is with us. A reality that we celebrate on Pentecost.
So whether the day is sunny and uplifting, or if it is cloudy and full of gloom, remember these words: “This is the day that the Lord has made (and is in), let us rejoice and be glad in it!” May God help you celebrate each day that you have been given and may you celebrate the presence of the Spirit in your life this Pentecost!
